Environmental Sustainability

Is the practice of protecting and managing natural resources—like water, air, soil, and forests—in a way that meets our needs today without damaging the environment or using up resources that future generations will need.

There is a 4.1 trillion investment gap to reach global environmental sustainability targets by 2050.

Key challenges

insufficient recycling

Between 1.3 and 2.4 million tons of plastic enter the ocean each year, and over 80% of wastewater flows back untreated.

Biodiversity loss

Since 1970, the global population of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians has declined by 68%.

Climate resilience needs

Infrastructure damage from climate-related hazards costs low- and middle-income countries between 391–647 billion each year.

Resources depletion

Humans are using natural resources so quickly that it would take 1.75 Earths to sustain their current level of consumption.

Global warming

To meet the 1.5°C climate target, global net greenhouse gas emissions need to drop by 43% by 2030, but current regulations fall short.

Water scarcity in Saudi Arabia

95% of the country’s land is desert, making it one of the most water-scarce nations in the world.

Desertification

In 2019 alone, 20 million hectares of land were affected by degradation and desertification. In addition, the Kingdom has lost 50% of its tree cover in the past 20 years.

Resources waste

On average, each person in Saudi Arabia produces 105 kg of food waste every year.

Dependency on fossil fuels

In 2022, 99.8% of Saudi Arabia’s electricity came from fossil fuel sources.

Air and water pollution control and compliance

Air pollution in Saudi Arabia is a major concern, with PM2.5 levels 13 times higher than WHO guidelines. In addition, 8% of deaths from diarrhea are linked to unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation.
